PROJECT CHALLENGE
Redesign the existing arts school in Harlem, NY.
PROJECT OUTCOME
By opening up the building's facade and arranging the programmatic layout around the central lobby and courtyard space, a more transparent building will create physical connections between the school and its community.
Hidden behind its brutalist brick wall for nearly 5 decades, Harlem School of the Arts has been an institution essential to the Harlem community. The educational facility that housed and nurtured its children into the different disciplines of the arts is physically disconnected from its Harlem community.
Through a series of folded surfaces made on the facade of the street wall, the school will create openings and more engagement on the street front. To engage in the context of the neighborhood, the materiality of the facade will remain brick.
